Welcome to the BBI NJL / NEJL Hub — your go-to place for everything related to Ballina Basketball’s Junior Representative Program. Parents, players, managers and coaches can find key dates, trials information, resources and program expectations here.

Quick overview: Basketball NSW runs the Waratah Junior Leagues. Ballina Basketball participates in NJL and NEJL. NJL is a strong representative pathway for developing players, and NEJL is an invitation-based Division 1 pathway where applicable.

Competition format

  • Runs March–July (typically 4 rounds + finals)
  • Weekend carnival style (Sat/Sun) with multiple games
  • Training commitment: 1–2 sessions per week (times confirmed after teams are selected)

Age groups & Breakers teams for 2026

  • U12 (Born 2015, 2016, 2017) — Breaker Boys & Breaker Girls
  • U14 (Born 2013, 2014) — Boys Navy, Boys Teal, Girls Navy, Girls Teal
  • U16 (Born 2011, 2012) — Boys Navy, Boys Teal, Girls Navy
  • U18 (Born 2009, 2010) — Boys Navy, Boys Teal & Girls Navy, Girls Teal

2026 NJL & NEJL Season Dates

Here are the key playing dates for the 2026 Basketball NSW Junior Leagues that Ballina teams compete in:

  • Northern Junior League (NJL): 14–15 Mar (Rnd 1); 2–3 May (Rnd 2); 23–24 May (Rnd 3); 20–21 Jun (Rnd 4); 25–26 Jul (Finals)
  • North Eastern Junior League (NEJL): 7–8 Feb (Pre-season); 7–8 Mar (Rnd 1); 28–29 Mar (Rnd 2); 9–10 May (Rnd 3); 13–14 Jun (Rnd 4); 25–26 Jul (Finals)

Costs

Representative basketball includes a program fee and additional travel costs. As a guide:

Expected player fee

$650–$900 (covers registration, venue hire, referees, training and carnival participation)

Additional costs

Travel and accommodation for away rounds are not included.

We support families where we can. A No Pay – No Play policy applies, with financial hardship considerations available upon request.

What’s expected of rep families?

Players

  • Respect coaches, teammates, referees and opponents
  • Commit to training and games with a positive attitude
  • Represent Ballina Basketball on and off the court

Parents / guardians

  • Support positively (and avoid sideline coaching)
  • Help when required — including bench/scoring duty on rep weekends
  • Follow the inquiry process if concerns come up

Parent inquiry process (simple and respectful)

  1. Wait 24 hours after an issue arises (cooling-off period).
  2. Talk to the coach privately (respectful, constructive, away from players/spectators).
  3. If still unresolved, email the Rep Coordinator: rep@ballinabasketball.com.au

Trials

Trials for all teams will be held at the Ballina Indoor Sports Centre (BISC). All players intending to trial must pre-register.

Trial date

Tuesday 28 October 2025 @ the BISC

Important: Registrations close 5:00pm Monday 27 October — you must be registered to trial.

Trial times

Group Time
U12 (Boys & Girls) 4–5pm
U14 (Boys & Girls) 5–6pm
U16 (Boys & Girls) 6–7pm
U18 (Boys & Girls) 7–8pm

Times above are the trial session times. Training schedules are confirmed once teams are selected.
